This is recommended to have a #75 orifice. We give the Btu range for this model at 6-24 (thousand) Btus per hour. In actuality you will have a range for this burner from 1/2 p.s.i. to 25 p.s.i. as this is a very stable burn at a low setting. 1/2 p.s.i. against a #75 orifice will use around 3,500 Btus/ hour. If you hooked this to a BBQ tank (approximately 4 gallons @ 91,500 Btus per gallon = 366,000 Btus) your burner would function for 105 hours. Full open this same burner would use 24,500 Btus per hour at 25 p.s.i. At this setting it would take about 15 hours to empty the jug.
The real usage is driven by practicality. Using this burner in the small foundry furnace featured in our pages each melt would take about 25 minutes. I figured I used about 12,000 Btus per melt. At this rate I could make 30 such melts of bronze with one BBQ size tank of propane which costs about $12.00 to fill. That is a cost of 40 cents a melt. |
